The Lions continue to tweak their roster and make minor changes during this mostly unimpressive free agency season. The Lions announced they have released safety Kenoy Kennedy and resigned DE Corey Smith.
The release of Kennedy was expected with the Lions having excess safetys on the roster. The Lions signed Kennedy as a free agent in 2005 from Denver. As a Lion, Kennedy picked up a reputation as a poor tackler and the signing of Dwight Smith and Kalvin Pearson at the same position signaled the end of the road for Kennedy. The Lions also spent 2nd round draft picks in 2006 and 2007 on Daniel Bullocks and Gerald Alexander at that position, so Kennedy was expendable. It won’t be a tremendous loss for us.
Corey Smith has been a backup defensive lineman for the the Lions the last season and a half. Last year, he saw action in all sixteen games despite only starting two. This was a good move by the Lions. Smith isn’t going to become a starter or dominate a game, but he provided steady relief off the bench and rarely hurt the team with mistakes, He signed a one year deal.
So, how have the Lions done so far this free agency? You will have to wait a day or two, but I will be giving my thoughts on that soon.
