lions-add-another-former-buc-to-roster

This weekend, the Lions agreed to terms with another former Tampa Bay Bucanneer Brian Kelly. That makes 7 times Coach Rod has gone back to the Buccaneer well since becoming head coach of the Detroit Lions. This includes Calvin Pearson, who at this point, has only signed an offer sheet which the Bucs still have a chance to match.

The Lions continue to search for some semblance of a solution to their cornerback woes of late. However, I am not sure this is the solution. Kelly is 32 years old and probably starting to decline. He was a pretty good cornerback a few years back and certainly was comfortable in the Tampa Cover 2 scheme. He has been slowed by injuries the last couple of years. Injuries and age just don’t mix in the NFL, especially at cornerback. Still, I find it hard to imagine that Kelly won’t give us a some level of an upgrade at cornerback from the last couple of years. I just don’t seem him as the long term answer.

I still look for the Lions to draft a cornerback with somewhere in the first three rounds, perhaps even the first, though that prospect is likely diminishing. The current poll running here at Lions Fans Online (also shown below) seems to show fans thinking the Lions need cornerback help though most of those votes were prior to the start of free agency.
