The Shaun Rogers saga continues. Earlier today, Coach Rod Marinelli made it clear that the Lions will not be given his outright release from the Lions. Coach Rod was very clear on this point. He said that either Rogers would be traded or he would be in training camp in July.
As to the trade, Marinelli sounded like he really would like to trade Rogers, but that the Lions would only do so if they got a good value. He also threw in a little caveat that said the Lions would trade anyone if it bettered the team. He also said he would be glad to welcome Rogers back for another season.
“That door will always stay open,” Marinelli said. “This is the best year he’s had, he practiced all year and didn’t miss any games.”
Personally, I hope we don’t get too greedy in the trade market. I suspect there are a few teams out there that would welcome Rogers with open arms, especially teams with a decent defensive line now where Rogers wouldn’t necessarily be expected to play a whole game. If we could get a defensive starter and a decent draft pick, I would pull the trigger.

This is a solid media move because teams will know that if they want Rogers they will have to compete for him; not wait till he’s released.
I agree.
I am still not sure that Rogers fits into Coach Rod’s plans for next year. This may be a way to get a solid player or two for him. I don’t think they will give him away.
This could possible put some pressure on Rogers if he is still a Lion going into camp. Then again, if he hasn’t been willing yet, will anything make him willing?
They can always cut him during camp if it still isnt working out.
I think there are teams who will take a chance on him. Oakland needs a lot of DL help. His cap number is big enough, would he take a pay cut?
I think you are right about other teams and hope so. I would really like to see us work a trade and get something. He may go on to great things with other teams. The potential is there, he just hasn’t managed to pull it out for us.
A couple of years ago when he was challenged, he actually stepped it up a bit. He might see it as a challenge/opportunity with another team that he might be willing to take a pay cut for a fresh start.
What kind of pick do you think Rogers is worth?
I personally think he has enough upside that a desperate team might take him and a second round pick to move up to the bottom of first/top of second.
What will probably happen is he’ll go to New England for a 4th round pick, take a pay cut and be a probowler for the rest of his career.
My dream hope would be to get a defensive starter and a 4th or 5th round pick… lofty dreams I admit.. A starter for us on defense, especially at a position like CB, might be a backup or nickel/dime player for other teams as we are not very good there…
I would hope we get more than just a 4th round pick for him, but its liable to be a cat and mouse game as others may perceive Detroit as being weak here thinking they still may just cut him.
